A few summers ago, Mommy, my big brother Kyle, and I decided to visit New York City. While I had a blast, one of the highlights of my trip was visiting the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Today I'm sharing my experience.
If you've never visited the Statue of Liberty, there are a few things that you should take into consideration.
Get there early
We arrived at Battery Park around 10:30am and the line to get tickets was already long. Once you have your tickets, you'll need to go through security and then board the ferry. The ferry ride is about 15 minutes long.

First, Tickets to enter the pedestal or crown must be reserved in advance, as these areas often fill up quickly. You can purchase tickets on the Statue Cruises website. Second, keep in mind that security lines can be long, so give yourself plenty of time to get through them. And lastly, make sure to dress appropriately for the weather, as it can be very hot or cold depending on the time of year.
Once you're inside the Statue of Liberty, there are a few things to see. The Pedestal Observation Deck is located just below the statue's feet and offers great views of New York Harbor. If you want to go even higher, you can take a staircase or an elevator up to the Crown Observation Deck. This is located inside the statue's head and gives you a 360-degree view of the city.
Dress for the weather
It was a hot day when we visited, so I was glad that I had dressed in light clothes and had worn sunscreen. I also wore comfortable shoes since we would be doing a lot of walking.
Plan to spend some time on Ellis Island
Ellis Island is also worth visiting. It was the gateway for millions of immigrants who came to America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, you can explore the Ellis Island Immigration Museum and learn about the history of this important place. There is a lot of history there, and it's definitely worth taking some time to explore. You can even search for your own family history.
Bring water and snacks
There are no food or drink options once you're on Ellis Island, so it's important to bring your own. Make sure to stay hydrated, especially if it's a hot day!
Allow plenty of time
We spent about 3 hours visiting Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. There is a lot to see and do, so take your time and enjoy the experience. You can see the sights from the ferry on the way back to Battery Park, so there's no rush.
