What books can kids read for Juneteenth? If you have no idea, I can share a few with you. While my mom shared her own collection of books for Juneteenth, I wanted to focus on books kids can read for Juneteenth instead.
Juneteeth is a special day for African-Americans, blacks, people of color, or whatever term you may call those of brown skin. I personally like to call myself a brown skin girl, while my mom says she's Caribbean-American. June 19, 1865, was the day that American Blacks were freed from slavery. It was a long day coming, but it finally came.
However, the past few weeks have seen many social injustices and racism, showing that we aren't as free as we would like to think we are. We came a long way, but we still have a long way to go. So with that being said, here are a few Books for Juneteenth for Kids.
We know her today as Harriet Tubman, but in her lifetime, she was called by many names. As General Tubman, she was a Union spy. Like Moses, she led hundreds to freedom on the Underground Railroad. As Minty, she was a slave whose spirit could not be broken. As Araminta, she was a young girl whose father showed her the stars and the first steps on the path to freedom.
Mazie is ready to celebrate liberty. She is ready to celebrate freedom. She is ready to celebrate a great day in American history. The day her ancestors were no longer slaves. Mazie remembers the struggles and the triumph as she gets ready to celebrate Juneteenth.
Now that Hannah’s papa has decided to make the run for freedom, her patchwork quilt is not just a precious memento of Mama — it’s a series of hidden clues that will guide them along the Underground Railroad to Canada. A fictionalized account of a fascinating oral history, THE PATCHWORK PATH tells the story of two of the thousands who escaped a life of slavery and made the dangerous journey to freedom — a story of courage, determination, and hope.
Clara, a slave, and seamstress on Home Plantation, dreams of freedom—not just for herself but also for her family and friends. When she overhears a conversation about the Underground Railroad, she has a flash of inspiration. Using scraps of cloth from her work in the Big House and scraps of information gathered from other slaves, she fashions a map that the master would never even recognize. . .
Born into a life of slavery, Ona Judge eventually grew up to be George and Martha Washington’s “favored” dower slave. When she was told that she would be given as a wedding gift to Martha Washington’s granddaughter, Ona made the bold and brave decision to flee to the north, where she would be a fugitive.
From her childhood to her time with the Washingtons and living in the slave quarters, to her escape to New Hampshire, Erica Armstrong Dunbar, along with Kathleen Van Cleve, shares an intimate glimpse into the life of a little-known but powerful figure in history, and her brave journey as she fled the most powerful couple in the country.
We hope our book selection will help get your own collection started for your kids. You can find the list of books, including my mom's, on her Amazon Storefront. Happy Juneteenth!
